Dorothy Circus Gallery is proud to introduce you to its new programme of double solo shows in Rome and London, starting in November with the opening of ‘Range Ta Chambre,’ the first double solo exhibition by Street Artist S.E.T.H. at DCG.

With this new exhibition and a unique approach, curated for us by Stefano Antonelli, we celebrate with our international audience the experience of the surreal and the rediscovered freedom of imagination, visual and conceptual codes that have always distinguished the curatorial line of DCG. Once again strengthening the link between the two DCG galler-ies, we invite our spectators on a journey from Rome to London and vice versa, discovering the dynamic Artist’s Diary of S.E.T.H. and the poetic dialogue that can be read between the lines of his stories on canvas. On this occasion, we will also inaugurate the grand opening of the permanent London location in Marble Arch.

Julien Malland, alias S.E.T.H., is one of the most renowned and beloved street artists of our contemporaneity. Born in Paris, Julien Malland studied at the Ecole Narionale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs of Paris (ENSAD) and, in 1972, he began painting murals in the 20th arrondissement of Paris under the name of Seth. He made himself known among Pa-risian graffiti artists by creating characters that stood out from the classical iconography of French Urban Art.

S.E.T.H.’s art aims at encountering people and cultures from all over the world, in order to broaden his and our horizon on life and urban art. By no coincidence, he is deeply en-gaged not only in mural painting, but also in film making and writing. He directed numerous documentaries, among which ‘Graffiti Argentina’ in 2014, ‘Khmers et Sprays’ in 2013, and ‘Les Nouveaux Explorateurs’ – a TV serial show produced by Canal+. He also authored the book ‘Extramuros’ (2012), which narrates Seth’s travels around the world.

Seth draws simple characters, mostly children, dwelling in imaginary environments that, like in a trompe l’oeil painting, belong to our reality while also opening up to a new visionary dimension. His children float in a timeless space where everything is eternal and contemporary at the same time. Moving away from an ‘easy’ graffiti code made of skulls and enraged icons, Seth celebrates innocence and simplicity by depicting extremely coloured and ordered compositions where the viewers get loose.

As Stefano Antonelli claims: “They [the children] represent us, they are the innocence lost in the disillusionment of our time. It’s the Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust, it’s the poetry of Giovanni Pascoli, it is the projection of the fundamental memory of our innocence at the time of the Internet and globalization.” These children are “suspended between life and illusion, protagonists of a unique and universal language that this artist has created conquering the world through the hundreds of thousands of shares on social networks, the only real exhibition space of street art.”

And indeed S.E.T.H.’s characters embody the hybrid culture of our present times, where contemporaneity and tradition meet and mix, giving birth to an artistic and social dialogue not only in the streets, but also on social media and on the galleries’ walls.

The title of the show, ‘Range Ta Chambre,’ means “clean up your room” – words everyone has heard from his/her mother when you are young, too young to care, too lost in a parallel universe of images, colours, and floating thoughts often too deep to describe with words. The same universe is brought back to life by the French artist who, through lines and hues and figures, helps us recall the dreams we dreamt in our bedrooms.

Each image renews S.E.T.H.’s and the Gallery’s invitation to navigate, thanks to the beautiful works on view, through the memories of a lost time where we can still find our inner child. The chambre where we meet the artist is the same room where we can find our lost fantasy, our purest emotions – the magic pixie dust that helps us fly.

La Dorothy Circus Gallery è orgogliosa di introdurre il nuovo programma di doppie personali a Roma e Londra, a partire da questo novembre con l’inaugurazione di ‘Range Ta Chambre’, la prima sbalorditiva doppia mostra personale dello street artist S.E.T.H. presso la DCG.

Con questa nuova esposizione dal carattere unico, curata per noi da Stefano Antonelli, celebriamo insieme al nostro pubblico internazionale l’esperienza del surreale e la ritrovata libertà d’immaginazione, codici visivi e concettuali che da sempre distinguono la linea curatoriale della DCG. Rafforzando nuovamente il legame tra le due sedi della DCG, invitiamo i nostri spettatori in un viaggio da Roma a Londra e viceversa, alla scoperta del dinamico diario d’Artista di S.E.T.H. e del poetico dialogo che si legge tra le righe dei suoi racconti su tela. Ed in questa occasione inaugureremo inoltre la grande apertura della sede permanente Londinese in Marble Arch.

Julien Malland, alias S.E.T.H., è uno dei più amati e rinomati street artist della nostra epoca contemporanea. Seth ha infatti diretto diversi documentari, tra cui ‘Graffiti Argentina’ nel 2014, ‘Khmers et Sprays’ nel 2013, e ‘Les Nouveaux Explora-teurs’, una serie TV prodotta da Canal+. L’artista ha anche pubblicato, nel 2012, il libro ‘Extramuros’, che racconta i viaggi di Seth in giro per il mondo.

S.E.T.H. disegna personaggi semplici, per lo più bambini, che albergano in ambienti immaginari che, come il trompe l’oeil di un dipinto, appartengono alla nostra realtà aprendosi contemporaneamente ad una nuova dimensione visionaria.
I bambini di Seth fluttuano in uno spazio senza tempo, dove tutto è eterno e contemporaneo allo stesso tempo. Andando oltre il codice di graffiti più “facile” e popolare, fatto di teschi e icone furiose, Seth celebra l’innocenza e la semplicità dipingendo composizioni estremamente colorate e ordinate dove lo spettatore può lasciarsi andare liberamente.

Come dichiara Stefano Antonelli, i bambini di S.E.T.H. “siamo noi, è l’innocenza perduta nella disillusione del nostro tempo, è la Ricerca del Tempo Perduto di Marcel Proust, è la poetica del Fanciullino di Giovanni Pascoli, è il presidio alla fondamentale memoria della nostra innocenza ai tempi di internet e della globalizzazione.” Questi bambini sono “sospesi tra la vita e l’illusione che abbiamo imparato a conoscere, protagonisti di un linguaggio unico e universale che questo artista ha saputo creare e che ha conquistato il mondo attraverso le centinaia di migliaia di condivisioni sui social network, unico vero spazio espositivo della street art.”

E infatti i personaggi di S.E.T.H. impersonano la cultura ibrida del tempo presente, dove la contemporaneità e la tradizione si incontrano e si intrecciano, dando vita ad un dialogo artistico e sociale non solo nelle strade, ma anche sui social media e sulle mura delle gallerie.

Il titolo della mostra, ‘Range Ta Chambre’, significa “metti in ordine la tua camera”: paro-le che ognuno di noi ha sentito pronunciare da sua madre quando era piccolo, troppo piccolo per interessarsene, troppo perso in un universo parallelo di immagini, colori, e pensieri svolazzanti spesso troppo profondi da poter descrivere a parole. Quello stesso universo si riaffaccia davanti a noi grazie al lavoro dell’artista francese che, tra linee, tinte, e figure, ci aiuta a ricordare gli stessi sogni che immaginavamo nelle nostre camerette.

Ogni immagine rinnova l’invito di S.E.T.H. e della Galleria e navigare, tramite le meravigliose opere esposte, attraverso i ricordi di un tempo perduto dove possiamo ancora ritrovare il nostro bambino interiore. La chambre dove incontriamo l’artista è la stessa stanza dove possiamo trovare le nostre fantasie perduta, le emozioni più pure, la polvere di fata che ci aiuta a volare.

“Le rappresentazioni di S.E.T.H. sono precise, puntuali e pazienti. Immagine dopo immagine l’artista ha dato forma e sostanza ad un immaginario che non sapevamo di avere, ma che probabilmente era lì da sempre, ci serviva solo il talento giusto per svelarlo.”
